US Treasury yield tops 5% as borrowing costs climb

    September 15, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield briefly climbed above 5% on Monday, returning to a level last touched in October 2023. Before that episode, it had not traded firmly above 5% since 2007. The yield later retreated, and the U.S. Treasury’s official daily curve showed 4.97% for September 14. That remained well above the 4.15% level recorded at the start of 2026, underscoring the rapid rise in long-term U.S. borrowing costs.

Energy prices and inflation have added pressure to the bond market. Brent crude traded near $107 a barrel on Tuesday after nearing $110 during Monday’s session. U.S. consumer prices rose 0.4% in August and 3.4% from a year earlier, according to federal data. The energy index increased 16.3% over 12 months, while gasoline prices rose 27.4%, keeping fuel costs central to the inflation picture.

The Federal Reserve began a two-day policy meeting Tuesday as markets focused on inflation and borrowing costs. The central bank’s target range stood at 3.5% to 3.75% before the meeting. Long-term yields can rise independently of the Fed’s policy rate because investors set Treasury prices in the market. The 10-year note serves as a key benchmark for mortgages, corporate debt and other forms of long-term financing.

Borrowing costs rise across housing and markets

Higher Treasury yields have already reached the U.S. housing market. Freddie Mac said the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 6.76% for the week ending September 10. That marked the highest level in more than a year and compared with 6.71% a week earlier. The rate stood at 6.35% a year earlier, showing how higher bond-market borrowing costs have filtered into home financing.

U.S. stocks also closed lower Monday as rising yields, higher oil prices and technology-sector losses weighed on major indexes. The S&P 500 fell 0.48%, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.56% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.29%. Higher Treasury yields raise the return available on government bonds, increasing competition for investor capital across financial markets. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions, so the yield surge reflected lower prices for U.S. government debt.

Global bond pressure keeps Treasury yields in focus

The pressure extends beyond a single U.S. market indicator. Government bond yields in several major economies have reached multiyear or multidecade highs during 2026. Higher yields increase financing costs when governments and companies issue new debt or refinance existing obligations. The U.S. Treasury market plays a central role in global finance, so changes in its benchmark yields also affect currency markets and the pricing of credit around the world.

Trading in Asia on Tuesday kept the 5% Treasury level in focus after Monday’s intraday breach. Oil remained elevated, while the U.S. dollar traded near a two-week high as investors followed the Federal Reserve meeting. The latest official Treasury data still placed the 10-year yield below 5% at Monday’s close. Even after that pullback, the benchmark remained near its highest levels in almost three years and continued to shape borrowing costs across the U.S. economy.
